A slow forming grass characterized by low clumps. Leaves start out green at the base, with red tips that assume more vivid hues in the summer through the fall. Moist soil is preferable, although adequate drainage is essential especially during winter. The grass flowers infrequently.

Grows easily in dry to moist, well-drained soils. Grows well in full sun and partial shade. Tends to displace native plant species in areas with warm winters, where the grass self-seeds. It tolerates shade, poor soils, and drought.
